IBJI Surgeon Completes Chicago Olympic Triathlon

Dr. Justin LaReau, a joint replacement specialist with the Hinsdale Office of Illinois Bone and Joint, recently completed the August event on Chicago’s historic waterfront. The race includes a nearly 1 mile swim in the waters of Burnham Harbor, a 25-mile bike ride on Lakeshore Drive, and a 10 kilometer run on the scenic Lakefront path.

For Dr. LaReau, who has competed in the event for more than 10 years, the race has sometimes led to him being on the other side of the orthopedic care system:

"Despite the well-balanced training, triathletes unfortunately are not immune to orthopedic injuries. Unfortunately, I have some experience in that regard," Dr. LaReau notes.

"I have gone through physical therapy, surgery, rehab, and even re-injury,” he notes. It’s a reminder that it’s important to have great medical guidance, and constantly work to adapt your activities and training to challenges which may present themselves. I’ve been inspired by many of my own patients in their own orthopedic journeys."

Dr. LaReau has even enjoyed this experience with his own family. He has completed the race previously with his own father, and now enjoys cheering on his son in the Chicago Children’s Triathlon. “Physical activity is so important for our overall health—especially mental health. One of my favorite things to do is sharing outdoor activity and competition with my wife and kids. As we say with IBJI—move better, live better!”
